Osteopathy is a form of drug-free non-invasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. It encourages the body to heal itself focusing on homeostasis.Osteopathic treatment examines movement restrictions, treating the body as a whole with the aim of improving mobility and reducing inflammatory processes.

Osteopathic techniques include many non-invasive, manual-therapy techniques. They may be divided
into two basic categories, direct and indirect techniques.

  • Direct Techniques - the practitioner thrusts through the restrictive barrier.
    • Includes high velocityflow amplitude (chiropractic) and muscle energy techniques.
  • Indirect Techniques - the practitioner works away from the restrictive barrier setting up the
tissues to "unwind" and move through the restrictive barrier on its own.

These techniques are not well known in veterinary medicine, but has the ability to treat animals back to normal function with neck, back and shoulder problems.
